On Suicide and Native Americans [19 Sep 2007|07:25pm]
[ mood | demoralized ]

I started today by failing (I mean FAILING) the first Latin test of the year, one I studied HOURS for.
Then I found out about a sex ed portion of a class I'm taking that is EXACTLY like the MISERABLE ONE I took three years ago.
Then I drove into pre-rush hour, then rush hour traffic, in two separate trips to the same place.
Then I was called manic-depressive, bipolar, and suicidal. ("Suicidal" is a new one.)
Then I had to try for half an hour just to get online and vent on LJ.

I really wish I knew my family better. At this one storytelling workshop I went to, the speaker talked about the tribal ritual of constantly recalling and praying for your ancestors. He said, think about one of your ancestors and we'll pray for them. The only ancestors I can honestly say I know are my parents. Thanks to the hippie movement, it sure seems like they distanced themselves (or outright shunned) their families from teenagerhood onward. So they don't talk about their families much. For a family tree homework a few years ago, we had to CALL my GRANDMA who I don't remember meeting and who my dad hadn't talked to in years, to ask for one of the names of my great-uncle. That's only two generations back (parents, grandparents) and my own PARENTS, and for those of you keeping count at home for whom it's only ONE generation, don't know their family's NAMES.

There are even time periods in my parents' lives that I had no idea what they were doing. The holes in the family oral tradition have always been gaping, but I only realize now how gaping they are.

I've grown up in such an encouraging environment, and school is so naturally forward-looking, it never really occurred to me that I had such a fresh start - I make my own way, my own reputation, I don't have anyone or anything holding me back or dragging me down.

I always managed to turn it into pseudo-bragging when people began listing their heritages (1/2 Irish, 1/4 German, etc.) and I would always say "I'm a little bit of everything" or "I'm all of Western Europe" or everyone's favorite "I'm American" "But you're not NATIVE American, you had to come from somewhere!" *facepalm* "My birthplace is United States of America, I'm American. If you follow your logic far enough back, we're all African." [insert pointless argument here] I was always told to just get over the fact I have to go into discussions of the history of humanity to justify the fact that I'm American.

I'm starting to think I had too fresh a start. I don't know where I came from. I have to make my own ground to stand on. I have a past, but I don't know it. It's like I got drunk one night and forgot everything I did. I know stuff happened, but unless I ask other people (who may or may not always be available), there's no way I can ever know.

It's like my Latin test. I hate it when life tests me in material I didn't even know I needed to learn.

TMI [14 Sep 2007|09:55pm]
[ mood | worn out ]
[ music | Plain White T's ]

TMI. Too much information.

Sometimes entertaining. Sometimes disgusting. Always gratuitous.

Example 1: Learning from some of my highly intelligent fellow classmates *cough* the price of condoms.
Example 2: Hearing a detailed story about how a wrestler got beat up so bad his tooth came out his nose.
Example 3: An overextended puerile rant from a girlfriend about her recent ex and why they have mutually excommunicated each other from friendship.

Today contained WTMI.
Waaaaaayyyyy too much information.

Two more years and I'll be done with school... [09 Sep 2007|10:20pm]
[ mood | hopeful ]
[ music | clicking keyboard ]

HA I wish it were two years till I were done with school... it feels like twenty.
Another year, another set of tests, concerns, volunteering, jobs, problems, hopes, etc.

And another year of finding marvelous procrastination outlets!

Like updating my ancient LJ... on my BRANDY NEW MACBOOK PRO!!!

Yes, I foresee many opportunities to revisit LJ this year... but I hope my schoolwork always does come first, which it usually does, as exhibited by my lack of entries.

But instead of venting to the wall, I resolve to vent here. In a legible, coherent, non-stalker-inducing fashion. It's my New School Year Resolution. Or something.

Farewell for now - and remember I always do an absolutely terrible job at keeping my New Year's Resolutions.

Missing You, LJ [02 Nov 2006|09:45am]

Long time, no blog. Same old stressful busy awesomeness at school, complete with love interest YAY!

He's so nice to me. Took me to see The Prestige - ZOMG GENIUS!!! It takes a lot of thought to have a good mystery plot - a lot of movie people totally ignore that "plot" stuff - but on top of that, it was scary, it had a slight sci-fi flavor, Christian Bale is my new idol, exciting, thought-provoking, pretty, and I HAD NO IDEA HOW IT WOULD END. That hasn't happened in a long time. How my little Romeo guessed it, no idea.

Volunteering at a Sunrise Assisted Living these days. Calling bingo and playing piano during dinner. I love my old people!
One lady today in the Alzheimer's unit pretty near had a breakdown from homesickness today. I think she asked the person sitting next to her at dinner if he would come to her funeral when she died. I could have heard wrong, I was a little distracted playing piano, but still - that's harsh.

I misseth thee, Ell-jay! Wherefore must thou be so buried in my full planbook?

(Did Shakespeare even have a planbook?)

HOW LONG?!?!
"A long time."
LOVE that part!

Totally not procrastinating for essays. Of course not. *psh*

Totally not obsessive over Keanu Reeves after seeing "The Lake House" yesterday either. *psh* So what if it filled a deep chick flick need?

Totally not raiding Barnes & Noble tonight either. *double-psh* Because it's totally not my new absolute-favorite-of-all-time I-want-to-have-its-babies store. Of course not.

However, even though I am totally not in denial in any way shape or form, I can say one thing for certain in this highly overdue entry:

I MISS YOU LJ!!!! CALL ME!!!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest [07 Jul 2006|10:02pm]
[ mood | overjoyed ]

Just came back from Pirates 2. OH THANK YOU EVERYTHING THAT IS HOLY. It was so awesome. I feel so... satisfied - which is odd, since it's no spoiler that it's a cliffhanger. (DUH - think Star Wars. The first one stood on its own, since they thought it would be a flop, but then they make two sequels, back to back - of COURSE the second one is a cliffhanger!)

Onward to my SPOILER-filled Review of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2!!! )
P.S. *crosses fingers* Please let Pirates make more than Titanic. Please let Pirates make more than Titanic. Please let Pirates make more than Titanic. PLEEEEEASE.
...That only means to me that people like Pirates more and obsess over it more. IMHO, Pirates is much more worthy of obsession than Titanic. Much. The Jack Sparrow poster in my room is proof enough of that. *twitch* I don't say good night to Jack every night, of course not... WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME FUNNY??!?!? ;)

P.P.S. ZOMG BEST CASTING NEWS EVER: In the potentially-confusingly-titled Batman Begins sequel (Batman 6? Batman Restarts His Engine? Batman Begins Again?) not only will Christian Bale return as the schmexy, schmexy Dark Knight, but the JOKER will be played by none other than the even schmexy, schmexier... HEATH LEDGER.
THANK YOU OH MY LORD. *dies of happiness, goes to thank Him personally*

Yankee Doodle went to London / Just to see James Cagney [06 Jul 2006|05:50pm]
[ mood | content ]
[ music | le Tour de France ]

I stayed up late on July 4th to see Yankee Doodle Dandy. I <3 much that movie!!! Made me cry.
But what really floored me was Jimmy Cagney. Last time I saw him was in White Heat.

WHITE HEAT. The psycho gangster movie. "Top of the world, Ma!"

And now he was DANCING. And SINGING. And SMILING in a purely non-evil, totally un-creepy fashion!

Thanks to TCM's lovely intros, I found out that James Cagney really was a song-and-dance man, even though he didn't get to do that much in the movies - are the Hollywood people NUTS? (Stupid question.) The man is talented. WAAYYY talented. And the only Oscar he ever won was for playing George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy. *shakes head* The irony. But now I officially love James Cagney.

...

WHAT is my PROBLEM??? I'm always becoming OBSESSED with DEAD GUYS!!!

The other day I was watching unofficial pre-4th fireworks (see title of entry), and there were these thunderclouds right behind the fireworks. There was lightning. But not the kind of lightning that goes from cloud-to-groud, but cloud-to-cloud. It was flashing at the same time as the fireworks, right behind it, like nature's way of applauding or something. Or maybe the fireworks were the human way of applauding nature - whatever. Either way.

So. COOL.

Random Thoughts [03 Jul 2006|09:15pm]
[ mood | headachy ]

Watched Gone With the Wind documentary last night - Vivien Liegh and Laurence Olivier? Together? And they called him LARRY?

Heard about this movie called The Women. With an all-women cast. No men. They're mentioned and complained about, but not on-screen. *chinstroke* Interesting. Especially considering that most Hollywood movies are about men. Like Lawrence of Arabia. All about men. No women.

Finally got a JACK SPARROW POSTER YESTERDAY OMG SQUUEEEE!!! It's the one sorta looking up at him, and he's holding his sword across his chest, like this.

And saw a video of the new movie elements in the Pirates ride in Disney world. The Jacks actually moved like Johnny Depp, and looked like him too! I was impressed.
I am totally riding that ride at least TEN TIMES. EVERY DAY. WHEN I AM THERE.

[ music | "Hard Day's Night" extras ]

I am officially becoming a Beatles fangirl. FORTY (40) YEARS TOO LATE. I just saw A Hard Day's Night. Officially one of my new favorite movies - the camerawork and editing is AWESOME. I've always loved the Beatles music, but after seeing how they laughed all the time (and finally being able to tell apart who's who - I know, I know, I'm ashamed) and were just awesome all around people, I am officially IN LOVE WITH THE BEATLES. Ringo's my favorite, he's the coolest, but Paul's the cutest - he has those big eyes and that cute little smile in Hard Day's Night. OMG. I feel SO behind the times. *sigh*

In other news, the Internet connection is SO FLAKY it takes me TEN TIMES LONGER to do ANYTHING on the Internet GAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH.

A Beef with the Telly [28 Jun 2006|08:35pm]
[ mood | apathetic ]
[ music | Colbert Report, documentaries ]

Something has been bothering me about the History Channel, the Discovery Channel and the like. They have really interesting stuff on there, but they always have this twist on it, like, BE AFRAID CAUSE WE'RE ALL GONNA DIIIEEEEEEE.

Seriously. Tsunami documentaries after the big Asian one - fascinating. Closing statements: "But could it happen in the Atlantic... and KILL US ALL?" *cue computer simulation showing just that*
Food documentary on Modern Marvels right now - segue into commercial: "But scientists have found a new protein, a DANGEROUS one, that can cause DEATH, and it's IN ALL THE MEAT YOU EAT." *cue scary twisting protein coils graphics* And on and on.

WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE. The DISCOVERY CHANNEL says so. With concerned-narrator voices and scary music - the scary music DOESN'T LIE. *eyeroll*

New Movie Theory - Beyond Genre [28 Jun 2006|05:09pm]
[ mood | distressed ]

While channel-flipping the other day, I came across some TV movie and stopped for a minute. There was this blonde-ponytailed, mascara-d waitress pulling over into this dive of a gas station with a sign outside that said they cashed checks. (Not cheques.) So she saunters inside, wobbling on her heels, Cut for the actual theory... )

In other news, my friend has this unknown rash all over her, and I've been trying to politely avoid too much contact so I won't get it, if it's contagious. In the shower today I find some kind of sore on my side. GAH!!! It looks more like a flea bite or something than a rash, but PLEASE GOD I hope it's not a rash! We don't really know what it is. GAH.

Pride and Prejudice [24 Jun 2006|08:59pm]
[ mood | listless ]

I just recently finished reading Pride and Prejudice. I like book!Darcy SO MUCH MORE than ANY of the movie!Darcys. Of the movie Darcys, I think BBC!Darcy was the most accurate, Olivier!Darcy was the most dashing, and 2005!Darcy was the least accurate, likable, and most stalker-like. I think it really helped to see some of Darcy's thought process in the book - what he was thinking while oogling Elizabeth - it made him seem less stalkerish and so much sweeter and SQUEEE!!!!

I'm glad no one reads this journal. If any P+P fans do, I won't live to see tomorrow. Especially since the latest P+P was so artsy and so over-iconed. *shudder* The rabid fangirl horror.

ETA: Totally just saw Bridget Jones' Diary. ZOMG. Very funny. Very rude. Very P+P even with COLIN FIRTH MARK DARCY SQUEEEEEEE!!! And who knew that Hugh Grant makes such an excellent sex-god/jerkoff? Interesting note: the term "chick lit" is derived from the term "chick flick," but this "chick lit" which came from the concept of "chick flick" was made into a "chick flick." Odd. *british accent* Very odd. I heart British accents!!!

Random Sweetness [24 Jun 2006|07:27pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

So the other day there was this big thunderstorm. Big like not so much rain, but reallyreally flashy lightning and reallyreally booming, sometimes even close enough to crash thunder. Normally I sleep right through thunderstorms. This one, I couldn't get to sleep, and just when I could get to sleep it kept me awake. Meh.

So it's 12:30 in the morning, and my cell phone rings. The rest of the story... )

In other news, people can be such idiots. (news?) I know so many people who say Spongebob is gay. That's logically impossible. Spongebob reproduces asexually, therefore he has no sexuality built into his genetics, therefore he has no sexual orientation, therefore he cannot be gay! And you won't believe how many people try to argue with that.

In other other news, I was sorta-kinda-notreally waiting for the abovementioned person to call the next day, since we sorta-kinda-notreally said we'd talk the next day since I was falling asleep over the phone, I get another call from one of my guy-friends' friends I've heard of (and seen a shirtless picture of - don't ask) but never met. Weird. He makes me guess who he is. I guess from the three guys in the aforementioned shirtless picture. Guys are idiots - he asks if I'm a detective or something. His name turned out to be Sean. He asked me if I was blonde (only in summer), if I thought he was hot (you wish), if I was really going out with this one guy (technically he hasn't asked me out yet) - it was a bizarre conversation. Kinda late at night too, like 10:00 or something.

Like, ohmygosh, I'm so popular! *tee hee*

In still other news, who knew Guido from Cars has such a following? *see icon* I even read this awesome fanfic at [info]cars_pixar about Guido's past - hilarious! And I never read fanfic! YAY GUIDO!!! PIT STOP!!!

Sweetness [15 Jun 2006|06:01pm]
[ mood | v. loved ]
[ music | Star Wars marathon culmination ]

Today I applied for my first passport. SQUEEE!!! Exciting!!! The lady who did our paperwork was surprisingly friendly. And then I get to leave the country SWEETNESS!!!

The second time I went to see Cars, I went with this guy. After the movie I asked him who his favorite character was. (Mine was Guido, the little blue Italian pit stop car -- he's adorable!) "I dunno." Master of words.
So then at quarter to midnight that night, he texts me and writes, "Hey i do have a favorite character from the movie the porsha cause she reminds me of this girl I know" Then five minutes later, "Good nite porsha"
I text him back the next day saying something to the effect of, "Thanks, hot rod. That was really sweet. :-)" And he sends me ANOTHER message that afternoon saying, "I wonder how the story of the hot rod and the porsha will turn out"

That was SO SWEET, even the spelling nazi in me squee-d at the utter sweetness factor. I remember when this guy wouldn't talk. At all.

ETA: Oct 1, after 1st kiss w/him: "Hey just thinkin bout u an friday nite and how great that made me feel i hope u liked it to its the only thing thats got me thru the past 2 days ur amazin lov u"
DOUBLE SQUEE!!!
